I had spotted
this gentleman many times strolling through the streets of Honolulu
dressed like a 40's era gangster in pinstripes, spats and a fedora,
or as a regal gentleman of the Edwardian era, in stached white collar,
floral boutonniere and handkerchief.. He really stands out in the
crowd of tourists in their loud aloha shits and casual beach wear!
I was thrilled when he requested that I paint his portrait!.
With his elegant
attire, I knew the perfect setting for this gentleman's portrait would
be the veranda of the Sheraton Moana Surfrider , Waikiki's oldest
and most beautiful hotel. I try to have a little "story"
in mind when posing my subjects, something to convey a mood and an
atmosphere. Shaded by a spectacular large banyan tree, the veranda
is a romantic place to view the blue Pacific, but instead, this gentleman
gazes wistfully toward the hotel entrance, perhaps waiting for someone
special to come through the door....
