This particular couple was from Japan, and were visiting Hawaii on their honeymoon. It is a popular new trend for many young Japanese couples to get married twice! First, in their native country, the bride and groom dress in traditional Japanese wedding kimonos. But on their honeymoons, they get married all over again in western-style bridal gowns and tuxedos, just for the fun of it!
During my four years in Hawaii, I painted hundreds of portraits of Japanese honeymooners, like this couple here. This couple later wrote me a letter thanking me for the painting. " Now that we are back home in Osaka, your painting is displayed in our home, and is a big hit with all of our friends who see it!"
