Mom's Kitchen was inspired by 17th century Dutch vanitas paintings. A Vanitas is a still life in which each object possesses a symbolic meaning. In this painting, the objects each symbolize an aspect of my mother's personality and character. Most prominent among the many religious icons represented in this painting is Our Lady of Guadalupe. Her miraculous apparition before a poor Indian peasant in 18th century Mexico makes her a symbol of hope to the unfortunate and downtrodden. My mother's hopefullness is a quality which held the family together during some very dark and difficult times. Sharing this impomptu shrine with these spiritual icons are the mundane tools and products found in any 20th century American kitchen. The dishwashing soap, the Ajax cleanser, a sponge and pot-scrubber, are symbolic of hard work, grittiness and perseverence. Mom's Kitchen is a tribute not only to my own mother, but to all mothers everywhere. Mom's Kitchen is now available as a Limited Edition Giclee Print on stretched canvas, for $295.
