Surprisingly, this pastoral scene depicts an area that is only about an hour's drive from the heart of the city of Los Angeles. Nestled in the rolling hills of northern LA County lies the sleepy town of Gorman, home to numerous small farms and ranches which sadly are increasingly threatened by urban sprawl.
Just behind these horses an eight-lane interstate hums with traffic. There was a "For Sale" sign on this property when I painted it last spring...it may not be long before these beautiful hillsides are covered with high-density housing tracts and these lovely poppyfields will be just a memory.
I felt it was important to record this peaceful scene of horses grazing in fields of orange poppies and violet lupines before encroaching development obliterates this meadow forever.
